but I had my finger on the #1 plug hole and had it on the compression stroke TDC when I installed it. What I am also wondering is if I have 'set the timing' incorrectly by having the cam synchronizer in the wrong spot. Part number OTC6477 is the Cam Holding Set. does the cam sensor plug end up facing the front of the car, or on an angle to the Part number OTC6469 is the Cam Syncro Positioning Tool for the 1997 - 2002 Ford F-Series trucks with the 4.2L engine. My question is: If I install the cam sensor contact firing through the gap at the synchronizer contact, does it make any difference which angle the actual synchronizer is installed? ie. It will puff out a bit of barely noticeable white smoke and then run ok without any smoke. Then when it does (after about 10 seconds) it will work its way to idle - definately being from having flooded cylinders. I have noticed now that sometimes it will just keep cranking and wont fire up. Anyway I fitted it correctly and the car started up fine. The balancer had one long line on it and I thought this must be the TDC marking, but the markings had actually been coated in rust/grit. After building my engine (same as 98 Explorer over there) I think I had put the cam sensor in wrong. Hi guys I have searched all over the net and haven't found anything very useful to my specific problem.
